Writer Guest of Honor
Jack McDevitt is a Philadelphia native. He has been, among other things, a taxi driver, a naval officer, an English teacher, and a customs officer.
His first story, "The Emerson Effect," appeared in The Twilight Zone Magazine in 1979. He started writing novels after Terry Carr invited him to participate in the celebrated Ace Specials series. His contribution was The Hercules Text, which won the Philip K. Dick Special Award in 1987. McDevitt has produced fourteen novels altogether. Seven of them have qualified for the final Nebula ballot. Seeker won in 2007. In 2004, Omega won the John W. Campbell Memorial Award for best novel. Altogether he has been on the final Nebula ballot fourteen times.
His most recent books are The Devil's Eye, an Alex Benedict mystery from Ace, and Cryptic: The Best Short Stories of Jack McDevitt, from Subterranean.
McDevitt won the first international UPC competition for "Ships in the Night," which eventually became Ancient Shores. He has won both the Phoenix and SESFA awards, reserved for writers with a Southern connection, for his body of work. He is believed to be the only Philadelphia taxi driver able to make that claim.
His interests include, especially, chess, classical history, and the sciences. He has been a diehard Phillies fan since the days of the Whiz Kids. He is married to the former Maureen McAdams, and resides in Brunswick, Georgia, where he keeps a weather eye on hurricanes.
